A circular route, starting and ending at Fujino Station, two stops further west from Takao on the central main line, although we ended up taking a conveniently passing bus to avoid the last stretch up a steep climb to the tunnel connecting to Fujino Station.

コース状況／危険箇所等

The course is clear, well sign posted and in good condition. In comparison with the paths between Mt Jinba, Mt Kagenobu and Mt Takao however they tend to me much more narrow with less steps or similar maintenance, unsurprising given the trail seems much less visited than those.

It is worth noting that there is a pedestrian tunnel just to the east of the road tunnel that goes north from Fujino Station. If you use the pedestrian tunnel, you should turn to the right/east on emerging from it to find the start of the path. There is also - in theory - a path up to Mt Takatori if you turn left after leaving the tunnel but it seems very rarely used and impossible to really find the route up to the ridge that starts the walk.

A picture of Yosano Akiko, the author of 'Midaregami' (Tangled Hair), a series of short Japanese poems (tanka) which has been identified as an early Japanese feminist work. Ms Yosano underwent a period of convalescence in nearby Uenohara and the photo here celebrates a poem written during that period that talks about the view over the area.

This route up Mt Takatori lacks the panoramic views of Mt Kagenobu, Mt Jinba or Mt Takao but more than makes up for it in being more peaceful and more natural. The majority of the path is through broadleaf trees rather than the commercial pine plantations that cover a good part of these other mountains. The tracks themselves are less maintained, so more naturally blend in to the rest of the mountain. Best of all, the track today (the second working weekday after Golden Week) was deserted - we could have it all to ourselves.

Although the views are not as good as the other mountains mentioned above, there are still some very nice perspectives over to the south above the main valley towards Tanzawa, including a view of Mt Fuji, and on the other side towards Mt Jinba etc. The peak has a nice bench and is a great place for lunch as well.

Well worth coming back for the autumn leaves, hopefully for a better and more peaceful display than on the paths near Takao.
