The Refugio Puez – Vallunga circuit hike is a classic trek in the UNESCO-listed Puez-Odle Nature Park, offering spectacular alpine scenery and a rewarding challenge. Here are the key details:
Route Overview
• Start/Finish: Selva di Val Gardena (Wolkenstein), at the Vallunga (Langental) car park.
• Main Trail: Follow trail no. 14 from the Vallunga entrance, gradually ascending through forests and meadows, passing the San Silvestro chapel, and continuing onto the rocky plateau of Pra da ri.
• Refugio Puez: At about 2,475 m, this remote hut is accessible only on foot or by helicopter; it serves as a highlight and a rest point.
After reaching Rifugio Puez, we chose a longer adventure and continued from Rifugio Puez to Forcella de Ciampei, crossed Crespëina High Plateau, past Lake Crespëina, and returned via Passo Gardena . This extension adds significant elevation and distance, with rocky, sometimes slippery terrain but breathtaking vistas over the Dolomites. When we finally returned to the car park, the cafeteria with delicious coffee and carrot cake was closed already.
