The Telecabine Gondelbahn Forcella del Sassolungo is a narrow, upright cable car, uniquely designed in 1972 to carry only two standing passengers at a time. It takes you from Passo Sella up 493 meters vertically to the Forcella del Sassolungo pass at 2,686 meters, near the Toni Demetz hut.
On a misty early morning at eight-thirty, we jumped into the slim cable car. The ride lasted 17 minutes! Looking ahead and behind, the two lines of moving cable cars were all empty. The mist swirling around the sharp mountain cliffs, combined with the spooky engine sound, made you sometimes feel trapped, as if you were a victim in the 1972 Spanish film La Cabina. What a relief it was when we stepped onto the snow-covered ground and greeted some rock climbers heading into the thick mists before eventually disappearing from the Forcella. We ventured around the hut, determined to aim for Rifugio Vicenza Langkofelhütte at 2,253 meters the next day.
