This route combines accessible chairlift access with a rewarding hike to the foot of one of the most iconic rock formations in the Dolomites: the Vajolet Towers.

To begin our hike to Rifugio Re Alberto I, perched at 2,621 meters at the foot of the Torre Vajolet, we started in Pera di Fassa. We took three chairlifts, Vajolet 1, Vajolet 2, and Pian Pecei, which brought us up to the area near Ciampedie. From the top station, a clearly marked trail led us into the woods toward Rifugio Gardeccia. This initial stretch was on a wide, comfortable path suitable for hikers of all ages and took about 40 minutes.
Leaving Gardeccia, we followed path 546, ascending on a moderate gravel road through lush alpine meadows and rocky outcrops. As we climbed, the dramatic peaks of the Catinaccio range became more prominent. The hike to Rifugio Vajolet took around an hour and offered increasingly impressive views.
From Rifugio Vajolet began challenging sections involving scrambling and crossing patches of snow and meltwater on steep, rocky terrain. Steel cables provided extra security in some sections. The strenuous and demanding ascent rewarded us with opportunities to talk with rock climbers about their experiences and routes, to look down on breathtaking views of gorges, to marvel at the massive limestone rock walls of King Laurin’s crag, and finally to get up close to the striking spires of the Vajolet Towers.
