We started at the trailhead near 2,300 meters after receiving a brief, obligatory talk about safety and the national park’s flora and fauna, including the possibility of encountering Taiwan black bears and snakes. The hike climbed steadily through pine forests to the Siangyang Cabin at 2,850 meters.
Day two began at 3 AM. Thick mist and clouds obscured most views?we only glimpsed the lake’s oval shape, with no sign of the blue ‘Angel’s Tear.’ Still, reaching the serene Jiaming Lake at 3,310 meters and climbing Mount Sancha at 3,496 meters was rewarding and a dream come true for most of us, despite the weather.
On day three, we started the ascent to Siangyang Mountain’s 3,603-meter summit at 3:30 AM. The challenging climb was rewarded with a stunning sunrise over rugged ridges. After soaking in the views, we descended back to the trailhead, tired but fulfilled.
This trek combines physical challenge and breathtaking alpine scenery, making it one of Taiwan’s premier high-mountain adventures.
Note: The growth of Taiwania (also known as Yushan round cypress) is extremely slow, with its trunk diameter increasing by only about 1 centimeter every 22.8 years. Some of these trees live for several thousand years, with a few even surpassing 4,000 years in age. Adapted to cold, windy, and nutrient-poor conditions, Taiwania is a unique and important symbol of Taiwan’s high mountain ecosystem.
While hiking up Xiangyang Mountain, you can see both Taiwan fir and Taiwania, which are typical high-altitude coniferous trees. Taiwan fir usually grows around 3,000 meters, whereas Taiwania is more commonly found at higher elevations. Their resilience to cold and drought makes them characteristic plants of these mountainous regions.
