The Walami Trail is part of the eastern section of the Batongguan Historic Trail. It stretches about 4.5 kilometers from the Batongguan Japanese-era trail entrance to Kashin, with a gentle ascent suitable for families and general hikers without the need for permits. Beyond Kashin to Walami, permits are required. The trail follows the Lekuleku Creek (Lakura Creek, 拉庫拉庫溪) and features several suspension bridges, notably the green-styled Shanfeng (山風) No. 1 Bridge, which crosses a deep valley and is a scenic highlight. Near the bridges is Shanfeng Waterfall, accessible via stairs to an observation deck, offering close views of the waterfall and emerald pool.
Along the path, the ecosystem is rich, with frequent bird calls, sightings of Taiwan blue pheasants, monkeys, and even snakes. ( We spotted a Deinagkistrodon百步蛇 at the camp site! ) Early mornings present beautiful dawn skies, and at night, the Milky Way is visible. Historical remnants from the Japanese era include police outposts, restrooms, and resting platforms. One famous landmark is the “Shark Rock”「鯊魚石」地標 , a large rock resembling a shark. The Walami Cabin provide shelter and overnight accommodation.
Overall, the trail is in good condition with sturdy bridges and walkways, although some sections may have landslides or collapses due to natural conditions, so hikers should stay alert to trail conditions and safety.
