Given the forecast was for 30C later in the day it seemed best to shorten the walk with a taxi to the base of the western climb up Mount Momokura. Fortunately a taxi was waiting at the station, but we were probably lucky as I would guess they are few and far between. There is a taxi telephone number a fluent Japanese speaker could call (see photo) pasted up at the taxi stand. Buses are also available to the mountain base, but these are very infrequent and taking a bus would need significant planning ahead (timetable also in photo). Return: From Saruhashi Station |
コース状況/ 危険箇所等 |
The approach from the western side that we started on seemed less used than the other routes up Mount Momoyama. There were quite a were fallen trees lying across the path and, while these are only a fairly mild inconvenience, at some points the path diverted around them and became a little unclear. Given the path climbs up the ridge however, and that the path itself is generally clear to see the fallen trees were not too much of a problem. One section of the climb is very steep - a casual walker from the UK say - would likely be surprised at such steepness if they have not been walking in Japan before. The first part of the descent is also very steep and somewhat rocky, but there is a chain down the most challenging parts and overall no problem if you chose your steps carefully. |

感想
We climbed this on a day when the temperature was forecast to go up to 30C so lots of water is essential. We took two litres each but should have taken more to be on the safe side - we still had to get some more water from the vending machines on the way to the station.
This is certainly one of the more challenging mountains for the beginner compared with something easy like Mt Takao or Mt Jinba given the steepness of some sections on both ascent and descent, but the climb is certainly worth it given the views from the top (see photos!) and the wide and rather charming summit. The feeling is also rather more natural than the more popular mountains I mentioned with far less visitors, although this is still a popular mountain to climb.
