Day 1 - Machame Camp 3100m ...
Day 2 - Shira 2 Camp 3810m ...
Day 3 - Barranco Camp 3976m ...
Day 4 - Karanga Camp 3993m ... Baranco Wall
Day 5 - Barafu Camp 4673m ... Karanga
Day 6 - Mweka Camp 3068m ...
Day 7 - 下山 ...
Well who knows, this log might get attention of ambitious solo trekkers someday, so I'm writing down everything you need (I needed) to climb Kili on your own, especially during off-season. I put this plan in motion on 29 Oct 2013 - a small rainy season. As for weather clouds formed in the lower altitude moves in around 9-11am, then foggy weather dominates until the temperature drops below freezing in the evening. Mostly clear sky from dusk until morning. Temperature 23/32 Celsius in Moshi, 5/-2 at Shira Camp and -17 on the summit. High-season is Jul - Sep and Jan - Feb while low season is Mar - Jun and Nov. They corresponds with dry season (high traffic with group) and wet season (mostly private climb). |

From JRO Airport to Moshi you need to arrange your transfer, which is usually included in your itinerary if you booked Kili package via a local outfitter in advance. In my case almost all flights in Africa delayed more than one hour, so make sure you have extra time for transit. |
How to organize: According to the Tanzanian law, you'll always need a local mountain guide and porters to enter the park. Generally speaking a group of trekkers tends to hire one guide, one assistant guide, 5-15 porters (depends on group size), a cook and a waiter because these are all included in so-called 'climbing package' offered by many local outfitters based in either Moshi or Arusha. In my case it was a team of 1 guide, 1 waiter, 1 cook, 3 porters and myself. Price varies from one agent to another. I used Moshi-based local outfitter called ZARA Tours, which was 1800 USD for 7 days Machame including park fee, hotel and airport transfer. Large travel company such as G Adventures actually outsource Kili climb to ZARA, the fact is well-known among LP forum and TripAdvisor. Other unknown local agents may offer the same trip for 1400 USD or even cheaper, but keep in mind that the scam is also known to exist. If you wish to join a group, google fixed departures including full moon summit day during a high season. You might get 100-200 USD discount. As far as I'm concerned I chose new moon private climb in November to avoid traffic. Machame overview: Although Marangu 5-6 days is the most popular route up to the summit, I chose Machame 7 days so that my body could use considerable amount of time for high altitude acclimatization, which turned out to be the right choice (still I did suffer from headache occasionally though). Despite the fact that Kilimanjaro is an old volcano covered by ashes, I can assure you that Machame Trail is full of surprise and excitement especially after Day 3, you start traversing the southern slope of the mountain. At 4000m altitude there are plenty of wild flowers, lovely birds and impressive lava rock. Volcanic cone itself is VERY large partially covered by ice and steep like a wall, creating a spectacular view especially from Barranco/Karanga. Machame Route 7 days itinerary consists of following camp sites: Day 1 - Machame Camp 3100m ... From the gate 1828m, 11km cozy walk in a forest with 1300m altitude gain. Day 2 - Shira 2 Camp 3810m ... 5km steep ascent across moorland and rocky terrain with 700m altitude gain. Day 3 - Barranco Camp 3976m ... Day 3 involves Lava Tower ascent 4630m for acclimatization, then go down 600m. Day 4 - Karanga Camp 3993m ... Except a rock scrambling on Barranco Wall in the beginning, easy hiking trail. Day 5 - Barafu Camp 4673m ... After 3.5 hours walk this is the Base Camp for summit attempt. Sleep before dusk. Day 6 - Mweka Camp 3068m ... Most people stay here after summit attempt. Mweka Camp is in the forest. Day 7 - Last day ... After finish a gold/green certificate will be issued depending on the summit you reached. All camp sites have toilets. Everyday porters collect huge amount of water from stream nearby and boil until it is safe to drink. Cook prepare wide variety of Tanzanian foods high in carbohydrates and protein such as beans soup, chapati, biryani and samosa served with chilli/tomato sauce, fruits, teabag or coffee. They feed you so well that you probably won't need any snacks. Also it is worth mentioning that guide will advise you to drink water at least 2L a day to re-hydrate. CamelBak is recommended except summit day you need a thermos flask. How to prepare: Gathering mountain gears was the major TODO especially the last few weeks before departure. In the mountain you will only carry 25-35L Daypack filled with CamelBak, fleece jacket and Digital SLR. The rest goes to porters. For porters you pack everything inside a single 70-90L water-resistant duffel bag weighs no more than 15kg. Mountain boots, alpine jackets, gloves and sleeping bag should be rated -25 Celsius. A detailed gear list would be given to you once your booking is confirmed. If not you can always google anything you need. |

「Pole Pole.
I CAN DO THIS
Pole pole … ;)

Day zero
Emirates has a red-eye flight from Haneda to Dubai. Afterwork I checked-in around 11:30pm, and the flight departed on time. In Dubai another flight was awaiting: I followed the transit signs and plane was about to leave Dubai when cabin crew announced AC had been broken. After an hour of taxiing on the runway, temperature in the cabin was something like 35 Celsius. Finally I landed in Dar Es Salaam only to witness a small ATR aircraft moving on its way to take off. That was it, my connecting flight. Hello Africa, my first visit to Tanzania started with a little struggle because I had to visit Precision Air ticket office and beg for amendment. Luckily there was another flight leaving two hours later and a merciful lady at ticket office re-booked my seat with no additional charge. At 8:30pm I landed on Kilimanjaro Airport. Upon arrival I was greeted by Zara Tours rep (I informed them of delay over a phone) and linked up with my driver from Zara. I stayed overnight at Springlands Hotel located in outskirt of Moshi.
Day one
I met my guide Mr.Baraka Tarimo, 21 yo 5'8 tall English speaking mountain guide. Easy to remember since US President Obama's first name 'Barack' is Baraka in Swahili, meaning blessing. A bus bound for Machame gate was leaving around 9:30am from Springlands Hotel. Among passengers there were guides, park officials, porters and a German couple whom I was gonna start trekking together. They were planning to stay 9 days including Crater Camp, whereas I was doing 7 days. It was a long hike in a sub-tropical dense forest. Mosses hung from tall evergreen trees. Tree fern and other tropical plants were among them. Trees got smaller as we approached the camp in the afternoon, and we saw the first glimpse of Kibo Peak mostly covered by fog. From distance it had a symmetrical cone like Mt.Fuji, but now it looks like a giant horse saddle with many white stripe of glaciers. We reached Machame Camp around 5pm. Saw a gorgeous sunset over Mt.Meru before Maxie, a waiter brought a dinner plate to my tent.
Day two
I left the camp with Baraka at 8:30am, apparently the last. Machame Camp was pretty quiet except birds singing. Enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere contrary to what came next ... a steep rocky path. As we gained altitude, endless green slope, horizon and blue sky surrounded me and huge volcanic cone of Kibo gradually appeared in front. At 11am clouds caught up in us, but it didn't ruin my excitement because the flora was nothing like I've ever seen. For example Senecio, a daisy family which can be seen in my neighborhood, is also abundant in Kili but somehow it evolved into a giant tree. It seemed daisy flowers were dominant since I saw them blooming and there were tens of varieties. Reached Shira 2 Camp at 1:30pm, had lunch inside my tent. In the afternoon Maxie took me up to a small peak just above our campsite for acclimatization. He was 27 years old, the same age and despite we grew up far apart we had a lot in common. He showed me a cave frequently used as bivouac shelter by porters, except it isn't always improvised. They intend to use it when the high season brings influx of campers.
Day three
This particular leg was very important for acclimatization, as the trail goes up to Lava Tower at 4600m. Started at 8:40am, we continue hiking across moorland then I saw someone approaching us from ahead: unusual because Machame route is for ascent only. It turned out he was a porter, obviously had gotten too ill to continue. This was the first of such encounters I had in Kili. After exceeding 4100m plant life ceased to exist. What I saw in front was an alpine desert and imposing face of western breach, 1000m high wall made of lava rock and ice. Just before reaching Lava Tower we stopped for lunch break. It was after lunch that I started to feel headachey and nauseous. Baraka advised me to cross lava tower without break. We passed there around 1:30pm and kept walking at a high pace. Eventually we spotted German couple: porter was carrying Susanna's backpack. She had a queasy feeling too. Aside from headache, scenery was very intriguing while we were descending through an exotic garden of Senecio. Those over-sized plants standing up amid dry desert-like landscape reminded me of Star Trek. As soon as I reached Barranco at 2:50pm I had to open my sleeping bag immediately, as my headache was getting worse. After taking a nap I was feeling better but my appetite was gone. At night I drunk as much water as possible only to realize I should have brought my pee bottle.
Day four
As soon as I woke up I noticed my headache was cured. Shrunk my bivvy kit, freshened up with dry shampoo and a pile of wet wipes. My tent was warmed by a rising sun like a microwave oven. Day 4 follows a half day trail over infamous Barranco Wall, a steep rocky section. The hardest part of this climb was not scrambling but gasping for breath. Baraka stopped frequently to allow me panting till my heartbeat slow down. It was amazing that young porters similar to my size all passed us running and carrying stuff with their heads. Baraka told me when he started his carrier as a porter, after unloading the luggage his neck got cramped and he couldn't move his head for two days. After a short up and down we reached windy Karanga Camp at lunchtime. After 3pm Maxie took me to another acclimatization hike up to 4400m. Mist cleared as we ascended, revealing a stunning southeast face of Kibo. There was a pile of stone where we stopped by, and Maxie told me his porter friend was found dead due to hypothermia. After going back to the camp Baraka said Susanna had given up and Uwe, her husband is now attempting summit with a guide. I expressed my gratitude to Baraka because I was thankful that he managed to keep me going this far. Wind diminished after 6pm. Moshi town was visible from my tent and city lights were beautiful after sunset.
Day five
Another short walk to Barafu 4670m, the base camp for Uhuru Peak 5895m. Baraka walked pole pole (slowly slowly in Swahili) saying we have plenty of time so I should focus on saving my strength. Shortly after passing halfway point at 4400m we begun trekking up the Barafu ridge following a narrow pathway through lunar-like landscape. Grounds were covered by phonolite rock making metallic noise on every step. No flora and fauna were present. After the first one hour I was already exhausted suffering from headache. Sipping from camelbak was a difficult task without stopping for a minute, plus dusts and ashes didn't make breathing any easier. We kept on, and wind got stronger as we approached Barafu camp in a sunny midday. It was located on top of exposed ridge. Mawenzi 5149m now stands just above my shoulder. Spent the afternoon trying to relax and drunk a lot of water. I thought taking a nap might escalate my headache, so I stayed awake.
At around 4:20pm, partial solar eclipse started ... it did happen, with a temperature drop resulting in bizarre snowstorm. Around 4:50pm I heard someone driving a nail with a hammer outside to keep my tent from being blown away. I was inevitably working myself into a frenzy of self-doubt, bottomless fear and loneliness. I came to realize that porters were counting on good amount of tip because I'm Japanese, and Baraka, who is in charge of porters as well, seemed to be convinced that he must take me to the Uhuru Peak summit so that I would pay them with no hard feelings. In the evening Baraka came to my tent to check on me. I told him my headache was getting worse and maybe I won't make it to the summit. His reply was simple: don't overthink, just drink and you'll be fine. He said headache is simply caused by a lack of oxygen. Therefore by drinking excessive water body can produce enough oxygen to compensate it. No idea how he knew all this, but anyway after this conversation I felt secure trusting in my own abilities. I kept repeating myself I CAN DO THIS. Didn't eat much at dinner, went back into sleeping bag before the sunset.
Day six
At 11pm I was woken by Maxie carrying bowl of hot water, chocolate biscuit and a big thermos. I had slept surprisingly well and my headache was almost gone, but still sluggish and winded. Baraka came and asked me to pack necessary gear first and leave everything behind. Maxie would stay in my tent keeping an eye on my bivvy kit during my summit attempt. Changed the flashlight batteries, layered two gloves and a mitten at last ... I sighed and stepped outside at 0:15am. Baraka was there carrying my backpack swollen by big fat 2L thermos used in breakfast. Are you kidding? I tried to convince him I should at least carry my own gear, but he insisted that I must conquer the summit no matter what it takes.
The first 30 minutes consisted of fairly steep rock terrain. I looked overhead gasping for breath, and the sky was full of glittering jewels. Patches of fresh snow were sticking to the sand, rocks and everywhere I could look around in flashlight. Actually I was unable to turn around: sustained north wind was so strong that facing north resulted in choking. Over 30m/s gusts sometimes lifted my upper body and I desperately clung to my trekking poles. At 4800m there was a huge rock nearby which we used for quick shelter. Despite three layers of gloves my fingertip was slowly becoming senseless. Baraka wasn't wearing any gloves claiming he had been trained since childhood. His arm must be made of carbon fiber or something.
Shortly after we resumed trekking, irresistible drowsiness begun to power over me. My body was screaming at me to stop but I kept on walking ... suddenly I found myself standing on Aletch Glacier in Switzerland. Fullmoon was shining over Jungfrau, my old friend was toggling rope preparing for the climb, I looked ... there was Baraka, screaming "Stay awake, sir!". Needless to say I was hallucinating amid a walking coma. Night was so dark, cold and windy that I sensed nothing except a loud wind noise, plus a strong temptation to slip into an amnesia again and again. An astronomical twilight appeared above the horizon at 4:30am. As the sky illuminates, I gradually woke up. OMG how beautiful ... just below the Stella Point we saw a glorious sunrise which I would never, ever forget. The sun came up revealing summit glaciers which seemed to be much larger and extensive than I had imagined.
Other trekkers who got a head start were coming back. We praised each other rejoicing happiness. At 7:04am I finally stood on top of Africa, Uhuru Peak 5895m. Absolutely clear sky, nobody was there. We stayed on the summit for about 3 minutes taking photos, but Baraka was worried that my health condition would deteriorate if we were to stay any longer. Besides it was -17 Celsius! Descent was swift and easy because volcanic ashes worked as a cushion for legs. However the air was extremely dry: dusts get in every part of my body such as lung and throat, causing dry cough frequently. A warm welcome was awaiting us at Barafu Camp when we returned at around 9:30am. I went to sleep immediately because I was so exhausted. At 11am Maxie brought me a big lunch, but I accidentally threw up due to fatigue and sickness. Soon we started descending further down to the Mweka Camp at 3068m where we met a ranger officer carrying AK-47. According to him three Americans suffered hypothermia and passed out near the summit this morning. They were carried on a stretcher.
Day seven
Descent to the gate took us about 2 hours. After obtaining certificate we went back to Springlands Hotel, did tipping and farewell. It is worth mentioning that a shower after Kilimanjaro was by far the best one I had in my life . Next day I left for Dubai via Dar Es Salaam. 2 hours delay occurred, pole pole. Afterward 10 hours of dull red-eye flight back to Tokyo.
