To Mr.S.Aoki
Edmund C.Blunden
What do you look for in a city? Things
Reminding us of ancient fame, of kings
And emperors in full magnificence?
Towers, temples,pleasure-grounds?
Indeed,some sense
Of such past glory I would here awake,
But in departing let me also take
Some simpler memories of a newer sort.
The children in their school and at their sport
The tradesmen at their work, the student friends.
The dogs and horses ,while caln rain desoends
Or blue sky smiles-the busy maid or wife
Hurrying along the streets of modern life.
