コース状況／危険箇所等

That one section with all the fallen trees is closed off for good reason. It's doable and there might be a separate secret route I couldn't find but there was a lot of climbing up and ducking under trees. What should have been an easy 1hr stroll became a 2hr adventure. Fun, but difficult.

This is the entrance to the ツツジ尾根 trail. It's only signed by a small card saying "愛宕山" hanging from a tree branch. The first bit is a hard climb, after that it gets nice.

Seemed like the end of the bloom, but these flowers were beautiful.

From this trail intersection head up the hill. It's a non-stop harder uphill climb with a few nice views here and there.

First gate for the shrine. There are a lot more people around here.

Main stairs up to the shrine. The Atago Shrine here is the main of these shrines around Japan. This one is for the protection against fire.

Behind the shrine and after a bit on a grungy fire road, there is this sign. Here I headed off to Ryugatake.

Heading down off the mountain the decent is steep and the trail is not well marked. At the bottom is the convergence of two beautiful streams. They were crystal clear and full of fish.

Even though the trail was marked closed I saw another hiker head down it so I decided it would be ok. The first half was outstanding with a beautiful stream flowing down and these great views of Kyoto.

The second half was difficult. It was fun in a way, like a giant playground for adults. I had to climb up and duck under all these fallen trees. The typhoon last year must had been really bad in this area. What should have taken 1 hour took 2.

Love the use of cutting boards as signs here. I will have to visit that temple next time.

Perfect timing to get the bus back to the Arashiyama area.
