Between 七丈小屋 and the peak there were a few areas still with snow. You don't need crampons (アイゼン) but be very careful...especially when going down. |

感想
This hike came up last minute with friends at work. We were worried that we all wouldn't have free time to get one last hike in before I return to America after 6 years in Japan in July.
We had an early start getting up at 3am and arriving to the parking area by 4am. After asking around we found out that each one of us had slept less than 3 hours the night before because we were so excited about the climb.
A few hours into the climb my brother-in-law started to realize that Japanese mountain climbing is a bit more challenging that many of the climbs in Colorado. He said, though the mountains in Colorado are higher in elevation, they aren't generally as steep as this hike. He did comment many times that climbing through the forest was a really cool experience because the mountains in Colorado generally start above the tree line.
The first 5km of the hike was long but not too difficult. Once we reached the 五合目小屋跡 area, the hike became MUCH more difficult. Suddenly we were climbing up ladders that were long and nearly vertical. My brother-in-law was getting pretty tired so we all decided it was best that he stay at 七丈小屋. The owner was very kind and let him rest for free!
Next, my coworkers and I made the final 700m push for the summit. There was a bit of snow we had to climb through which was new for me. Thankfully my friends are very experienced at climbing in such conditions so they gave me great advice for the technique to climb through snow.
Even though I have been running as a form of training for the last year, my coworkers were still too fast for me to keep up. I need to keep training more! At the summit one friend made some delicious coffee and we talked about all the of the climbing experiences we shared together over the last four year. We too a picture together (not included) and I was trying not to cry.
We took off back for the 七丈小屋 and on the way down I saw some unusual bird that my friend told me were 雷鳥 (thunderbirds). They are flightless and made a really low sound...almost like thunder. My friends said it was rare to see a male and female bird together in Japan. The were very excited by the chance to take some pictures of them. When we returned to the hut, my brother-in-law was well-rested and ready for the climb down.
Though it took a bit of extra time going down because my brother-in-law was tired, we all made it back to the parking area safe and sound.
I will never forget this climb.
